Fantasy Preview: Pure Michigan 400

The Sprint Cup Series heads to Michigan International Speedway for the Pure Michigan 400.  After the race on Sunday, there will only be three more races until the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Tier A
Kasey Kahne
Kahne is a driver who still needs a win to get into the Chase.  Michigan is the type of track where Kahne excels, and he'll need all the speed he can get to work his way towards the front.

Bench:
Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Tier B
Joey Logano
Logano qualified second for the Pure Michigan 400, so he definitely has a fast car.  Logano won this race last year, and he should be strong again this weekend.

Carl Edwards
Edwards starts right behind Logano in third.  Roush-Fenway Racing is normally strong at Michigan, but they failed to run well in June.  I look for that whole team to turn it around on Sunday and have a strong run.

Bench:
AJ Allmendinger
Greg Biffle

Tier C
Kyle Larson
At this point, you'd be stupid not to pick Larson.  He's been good everywhere, and he finished eighth at Michigan in June.  He qualified 13th, and he should run towards the front most of the day.

Bench:
Danica Patrick

AJ Allmendinger Wins Wild Race at Watkins Glen

Originally written for CLNS Radio.

AJ Allmendinger won his first career Sprint Cup Series race at Watkins Glen on Sunday afternoon.

Allmendinger had to run away from Marcos Ambrose, who was the favorite to win the race going into the weekend.

“I wasn’t going to let Marcos take that from me,” Allmendinger said.  “If he could get to me, he’d move me out of the way just like I’d move him.”

“It wasn’t rough.  He didn’t try to wreck me, just tried to move me.”

The victory was the first of Allmendinger’s career, and it also locks him into the Chase.

“I just wanted it so bad for them, for this team,” Allmendinger said.

Jeff Gordon won the pole for the Cheez-It 355, and he led the field to the green flag.  He and Ambrose raced side-by-side through the first corner before he finally cleared the No. 9 to take the lead.

The first caution came out on lap 10 when Cole Whitt’s car failed to slow down and he hit the tire barrier hard in Turn 1.

Gordon led the field back to the green flag on lap 15, and he led until the first round of green-flag pit stops began.  Gordon made his pit stop on lap 30, and that allowed his teammate Kasey Kahne to take the lead.  Kahne pitted under the first caution so he could go farther on fuel than most of the leaders.
When Kahne pitted on lap 33, Ambrose took the lead for the first time of the race.

On lap 51, Gordon’s car lost power while he was running second, and he brought out the caution after he was unable to get to pit road.  Ambrose brought most of the leaders down pit road, but the top 7 cars stayed out to take the lead.

Jimmie Johnson led the field back to the green flag on lap 55.

On lap 57, a big wreck erupted when Ryan Newman made contact with Greg Biffle.  Newman spun hard into the wall, and then came back across the track into traffic.  He made hard contact with Michael McDowell, which tore the rear axle apart and sent him hard into the wall.  The race was red-flagged so that track workers could fix the guardrail.

After a red-flag that lasted for over one hour, the yellow flag came back out and the leaders brought their cars down pit road.

Carl Edwards stayed out under the caution, and he led the field back to the green flag on lap 60.  Edwards held off the field for the first lap, but Allmendinger was able to get around him to take the lead on lap 61.

On lap 78, Josh Wise stopped on the track to bring out the caution.  Allmendinger led the field back to the green flag, but the leaders didn’t make it through the first corner.  Kyle Larson got into Matt Kenseth, which spun Jimmie Johnson in front of the entire field.  Johnson was clipped by Regan Smith, and the caution came back out.

Allmendinger led the field back to the green flag on lap 86, and he and Ambrose raced side-by-side for the lead, and both cars made contact with each other.

Allmendinger worked his way back around Ambrose before the caution came back out on lap 87.  Denny Hamlin was spun at the pit entrance, and Ben Kennedy was spun coming out of Turn 1.  The race was red-flagged for 20 minutes while track crews cleaned up the accidents.

Allmendinger led the field back to the green flag, and he was able to get ahead of Ambrose for the lead.  Ambrose fought back and got beside Allmendinger coming to the white flag, but Allmendinger was able to pull away from the No. 9 to get his first victory.

Here are the unofficial results:

Fantasy Preview: Watkins Glen 8/10

The Sprint Cup Series heads to Watkins Glen for the final road course race of the season.  Below are my fantasy picks for the Cheez-It 355 at The Glen.

Tier A
Kyle Busch
Busch starts 19th on Sunday, but he knows how to get around Watkins Glen.  He is very consistent, and runs up front during most Watkins Glen races.  He finished up front in Saturday's Nationwide race, so he's ready to get the victory.

Bench:
Kurt Busch

Tier B
Brad Keselowski
Keselowski qualified in the Top 10 for Sunday's race, and he raced with Busch and Marcos Ambrose in that very close finish a few years ago.  Keselowski is pretty much good everywhere, and he's running as strong as he was when he won the championship in 2012.
I was going to start Tony Stewart, but following the tragedy with Kevin Ward Jr., Stewart will not race on Sunday.

Marcos Ambrose
This is Ambrose's last chance to get into the Chase.  Everyone knows he probably won't be able to get a victory on an oval, so he is definitely a favorite to win on Sunday.  He already won the Nationwide race, so a weekend sweep would get him into the Chase.

Bench:
Tony Stewart
Carl Edwards

Tier C
Boris Said
Said wasn't as strong as I expected him to be at Sonoma, but I'm still going to go with him this weekend.  My other option was Danica Patrick, and she's had an absolutely terrible weekend.  Said may not run well, but hopefully he'll finish in the Top 30.

Bench:
Danica Patrick

Original Sin #5.3
These tie-ins have been really cool.  In the last issue, we caught a glimpse of who Thor's long-lost sister is. Any ideas? Well, if you've been reading Guardians of the Galaxy, you're very familiar with who it is. Surprising, huh?

Original Sins #3.4
This mini-series tie-in has turned the world of Hulk upside down. Saying Banner's mad at Stark is an extreme understatement. But this finale is going to shake up the way Hulk is in the Marvel Universe for the foreseeable future, so hang on to your hats!

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Goes Back-to-Back in Pocono

Originally written for CLNS Radio.

Earnhardt won after using pit strategy late in the race.  After working his way to the front, Earnhardt was able to get around Greg Biffle to take the lead and pull away over the final 10 laps.

“We had a fast car all day,” Earnhardt said.  “Steve’s strategy was perfect at the end.  We definitely went home after the last race and made our car faster.  They wanted to get better and not have to get a little luck to win.”

Earnhardt had to hold off Kevin Harvick following the final restart, and Harvick made it very close in the closing laps.  Earnhardt said he was overdriving the corners, which allowed Harvick to close in.

“Turns 1 and 2, I just couldn’t back it down.  I was trying to hold them off, but they were just faster and I was overdriving it.”

This was also the first race after announcing who would take over for Steve Letarte as Earnhardt’s crew chief next season.  Earnhardt said he was extremely lucky to be a part of the team.

“We get along really good, and I just feel real lucky to have the opportunity to work with him and this crew.  They’d be winning races regardless of who’s driving the car; I’m just lucky to be a part of it.”

Rookie Kyle Larson won the pole for the race, and he led the field to the green flag.  He wasn’t able to hold on to the lead, however, and Joey Logano took the lead coming out of Turn 1.

The first caution of the day came out on lap 9 when Jimmie Johnson blew a right-rear tire.

Logano led the field back to the green flag, and he led until the second caution came out on lap 17.  Danica Patrick cut down a right-front tire and hit the wall while trying to get back to the pits.

Logano led on the following restart, and he continued to pull away from the field until Landon Cassill got into the wall.  The leader pitted under the caution, and Kurt Busch stayed out to take the lead.

Busch led the field back to the green flag on lap 34, and he led for 10 laps until making his green flag pit stop.  That allowed Jeff Gordon to take the lead, and he led until the caution came out on lap 51 when Joe Nemechek made contact with the wall.

Gordon led the field back to the green flag, and he led for 10 laps before pitting to begin a round of green-flag pit stops.  Gordon cycled back around as the leader on lap 78, but he gave up the lead again on lap 95 to pit.

Gordon cycled back around as the leader on lap 107, and he was leading when Johnson got into the wall to bring out the caution on lap 112.

Gordon led the field back to the green flag on lap 117, but the race did not remain green for long.  Coming out of Turn 1, Denny Hamlin got loose, which sparked a big wreck that collected 13 cars.  Some of the drivers collected included Brad Keselowski, Tony Stewart, Brian Vickers and Kevin Harvick.

Gordon led when the race went back green following a lengthy cleanup, and he led until making a green-flag pit stop on lap 132.

That handed the lead off to Harvick, who was trying to stretch his fuel to make it to the end of the race.  On lap 136, Biffle took the lead away from Harvick, and he led until the caution came out on lap 139 when AJ Allmendinger got into the wall.

Biffle led the field back to the green flag on lap 144, and he held off Earnhardt until lap 147 when he took the lead for the first time.

On lap 153, Kurt Busch hit the wall with a flat tire to bring out the final caution.

When the race restarted, Earnhardt had to hold off a hard-charging Harvick to take the victory.

Unofficial results:

1. Dale Earnhardt Jr.
2. Kevin Harvick
3. Joey Logano
4. Clint Bowyer
5. Greg Biffle
6. Jeff Gordon
7. Jamie McMurray
8. Ryan Newman
9. Denny Hamlin

Fantasy Preview: Pocono 8/3

This weekend, the Sprint Cup Series heads to Pocono Raceway for the GoBowling.com 400.  Below are my fantasy picks for Sunday's race at the "Tricky Triangle."

Tier A
Kevin Harvick
Harvick has either run strong this season or he's run terribly.  I think Harvick will run well this weekend.  He runs well at Pocono, and he finished 14th in June.  He qualified 6th for this race, so I expect him to run up front most of the day.

Bench:
Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Tier B
Jamie McMurray
McMurray qualified 8th for this race, and he should run strong on Sunday.  He got a top 10 in June, and I expect him to repeat that feat on Sunday.

Denny Hamlin
Hamlin has always run well at Pocono, and I expect him to continue to run well this weekend.  He starts 13th this weekend, but he is running without his crew chief who is serving a suspension.  Hamlin's team was penalized following last weekend's race at Indianapolis, and Hamlin will be looking to put that behind him in the Pocono Mountains.

Bench:
Paul Menard
Marcos Ambrose

Tier C
Kyle Larson
I'm starting to think that there isn't anything this rookie can't do.  He picked up his first career pole for this race, and he dominated the Truck race on Saturday before his engine let go.  I would not be surprised if we celebrate this rookie's first career victory at the end of the day.

Bench:
Danica Patrick
