Fantasy Preview: Watkins Glen 8/10

The Sprint Cup Series heads to Watkins Glen for the final road course race of the season.  Below are my fantasy picks for the Cheez-It 355 at The Glen.

Tier A
Kyle Busch
Busch starts 19th on Sunday, but he knows how to get around Watkins Glen.  He is very consistent, and runs up front during most Watkins Glen races.  He finished up front in Saturday's Nationwide race, so he's ready to get the victory.

Bench:
Kurt Busch

Tier B
Brad Keselowski
Keselowski qualified in the Top 10 for Sunday's race, and he raced with Busch and Marcos Ambrose in that very close finish a few years ago.  Keselowski is pretty much good everywhere, and he's running as strong as he was when he won the championship in 2012.
I was going to start Tony Stewart, but following the tragedy with Kevin Ward Jr., Stewart will not race on Sunday.

Marcos Ambrose
This is Ambrose's last chance to get into the Chase.  Everyone knows he probably won't be able to get a victory on an oval, so he is definitely a favorite to win on Sunday.  He already won the Nationwide race, so a weekend sweep would get him into the Chase.

Bench:
Tony Stewart
Carl Edwards

Tier C
Boris Said
Said wasn't as strong as I expected him to be at Sonoma, but I'm still going to go with him this weekend.  My other option was Danica Patrick, and she's had an absolutely terrible weekend.  Said may not run well, but hopefully he'll finish in the Top 30.

Bench:
Danica Patrick

These tie-ins have been really cool.  In the last issue, we caught a glimpse of who Thor's long-lost sister is. Any ideas? Well, if you've been reading Guardians of the Galaxy, you're very familiar with who it is. Surprising, huh?

Original Sins #3.4
This mini-series tie-in has turned the world of Hulk upside down. Saying Banner's mad at Stark is an extreme understatement. But this finale is going to shake up the way Hulk is in the Marvel Universe for the foreseeable future, so hang on to your hats!

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Goes Back-to-Back in Pocono

Originally written for CLNS Radio.

Earnhardt won after using pit strategy late in the race.  After working his way to the front, Earnhardt was able to get around Greg Biffle to take the lead and pull away over the final 10 laps.

“We had a fast car all day,” Earnhardt said.  “Steve’s strategy was perfect at the end.  We definitely went home after the last race and made our car faster.  They wanted to get better and not have to get a little luck to win.”

Earnhardt had to hold off Kevin Harvick following the final restart, and Harvick made it very close in the closing laps.  Earnhardt said he was overdriving the corners, which allowed Harvick to close in.

“Turns 1 and 2, I just couldn’t back it down.  I was trying to hold them off, but they were just faster and I was overdriving it.”

This was also the first race after announcing who would take over for Steve Letarte as Earnhardt’s crew chief next season.  Earnhardt said he was extremely lucky to be a part of the team.

“We get along really good, and I just feel real lucky to have the opportunity to work with him and this crew.  They’d be winning races regardless of who’s driving the car; I’m just lucky to be a part of it.”

Rookie Kyle Larson won the pole for the race, and he led the field to the green flag.  He wasn’t able to hold on to the lead, however, and Joey Logano took the lead coming out of Turn 1.

The first caution of the day came out on lap 9 when Jimmie Johnson blew a right-rear tire.

Logano led the field back to the green flag, and he led until the second caution came out on lap 17.  Danica Patrick cut down a right-front tire and hit the wall while trying to get back to the pits.

Logano led on the following restart, and he continued to pull away from the field until Landon Cassill got into the wall.  The leader pitted under the caution, and Kurt Busch stayed out to take the lead.

Busch led the field back to the green flag on lap 34, and he led for 10 laps until making his green flag pit stop.  That allowed Jeff Gordon to take the lead, and he led until the caution came out on lap 51 when Joe Nemechek made contact with the wall.

Gordon led the field back to the green flag, and he led for 10 laps before pitting to begin a round of green-flag pit stops.  Gordon cycled back around as the leader on lap 78, but he gave up the lead again on lap 95 to pit.

Gordon cycled back around as the leader on lap 107, and he was leading when Johnson got into the wall to bring out the caution on lap 112.

Gordon led the field back to the green flag on lap 117, but the race did not remain green for long.  Coming out of Turn 1, Denny Hamlin got loose, which sparked a big wreck that collected 13 cars.  Some of the drivers collected included Brad Keselowski, Tony Stewart, Brian Vickers and Kevin Harvick.

Gordon led when the race went back green following a lengthy cleanup, and he led until making a green-flag pit stop on lap 132.

That handed the lead off to Harvick, who was trying to stretch his fuel to make it to the end of the race.  On lap 136, Biffle took the lead away from Harvick, and he led until the caution came out on lap 139 when AJ Allmendinger got into the wall.

Biffle led the field back to the green flag on lap 144, and he held off Earnhardt until lap 147 when he took the lead for the first time.

On lap 153, Kurt Busch hit the wall with a flat tire to bring out the final caution.

When the race restarted, Earnhardt had to hold off a hard-charging Harvick to take the victory.

Fantasy Preview: Pocono 8/3

This weekend, the Sprint Cup Series heads to Pocono Raceway for the GoBowling.com 400.  Below are my fantasy picks for Sunday's race at the "Tricky Triangle."

Tier A
Kevin Harvick
Harvick has either run strong this season or he's run terribly.  I think Harvick will run well this weekend.  He runs well at Pocono, and he finished 14th in June.  He qualified 6th for this race, so I expect him to run up front most of the day.

Bench:
Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Tier B
Jamie McMurray
McMurray qualified 8th for this race, and he should run strong on Sunday.  He got a top 10 in June, and I expect him to repeat that feat on Sunday.

Denny Hamlin
Hamlin has always run well at Pocono, and I expect him to continue to run well this weekend.  He starts 13th this weekend, but he is running without his crew chief who is serving a suspension.  Hamlin's team was penalized following last weekend's race at Indianapolis, and Hamlin will be looking to put that behind him in the Pocono Mountains.

Bench:
Paul Menard
Marcos Ambrose

Tier C
Kyle Larson
I'm starting to think that there isn't anything this rookie can't do.  He picked up his first career pole for this race, and he dominated the Truck race on Saturday before his engine let go.  I would not be surprised if we celebrate this rookie's first career victory at the end of the day.

Bench:
Danica Patrick

100th Anniversary Special: Guardians of the Galaxy
These 100th Anniversary Specials have been pretty fun, and I've been really looking forward to the Guardians of the Galaxy one.  With the movie coming out on Friday, be sure to pick up both Guardians titles out this week and get ready to head to the theater!

Original Sin #3.3
Original Sin has been pretty good so far, and this little miniseries has been great.  It's really shaking up how the Hulk is going to be moving forward, and it will not be pretty.  Bruce Banner found out that Tony Stark messed with the Gamma Bomb, creating the Hulk in the first place.  But with Extremis now running through his veins, Banner has been able to turn himself into the Hulk with Banner's brain.  A smart Hulk is a dangerous Hulk.

That's it for this week!  Leave a comment and let us know what books you're picking up this week!

Jeff Gordon Wins Record 5th Brickyard 400

Originally written for CLNS Radio.

Jeff Gordon won the Brickyard 400 on Sunday on the 20th anniversary of his win in the inaugural event.

The win was also Gordon’s record-setting fifth victory at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, breaking a tie with teammate Jimmie Johnson.

“I don’t think there’s a greater feeling as a racecar driver,” Gordon said in victory lane.  “Total team effort to get to victory lane at Indianapolis.”

Gordon had to outrun his teammate Kasey Kahne on the final restart.  Kahne led a race-high 70 laps, and Gordon had to have a strong restart to win.

“I’m not very good on restarts, and wasn’t very good today.  I finally made the restart of my life today when it counted most.  I knew we had a great racecar and I just needed to get out front.”

Gordon said he knows how important this victory was for the season, and that to win at Indianapolis is special.

“I was trying so hard, with 10 to go, not to focus on the crowd.  I tried not to let it get to me, and you can’t help it.  Such a big race; such an important victory.”

Kevin Harvick won the pole for the Brickyard 400, and he cleared Gordon going into Turn 1 when the race began.  Gordon, however, was able to work his way around Harvick on the frontstretch to take the lead on lap 2.

On lap 21, the competition caution came out due to rain early Sunday morning.  Gordon won the race off pit road, but Joey Logano committed to a different pit strategy and took the lead.

Logano led the field back to the green flag on lap 26.  He held the lead until Kahne took the lead for the first time on lap 32.  After losing the lead, Logano pitted for fuel, which kicked off a long round of green-flag pit stops.

Kahne pitted for fuel on lap 38, which allowed rookie Kyle Larson to take the lead.

After Larson and fellow rookie Austin Dillon pitted, Denny Hamlin took the lead.  Hamlin was the only driver on a different pit strategy than everyone else, and he didn’t pit until lap 55.  That allowed Harvick to take the lead once again.

On lap 66, Gordon passed Harvick for the lead going through Turn 3, and they both pulled off to make another round of green-flag pit stops.

The caution came out during pit stops when Danica Patrick broke a right-rear axle coming off pit road.  Patrick’s car erupted in smoke and she stalled at the end of pit road.

Hamlin stayed out when the leaders pitted, and he led the field back to the green flag on lap 73.  Heading into Turn 1, Kahne got around Hamlin, which dropped him all the way to fourth.

Trevor Bayne cut down a tire and spun into the inside wall on lap 97 to bring out the caution.  Under the caution, Clint Bowyer stayed out to take the lead.

When the race restarted on lap 102, Kahne was able to get around Bowyer to take the lead heading into Turn 1.

Kahne pitted for the final time on lap 127, and that allowed Gordon to take the lead.  When the stops had cycled around, Kahne was the leader, but Gordon was right on his back bumper.

The final caution came out on lap 139 when Ryan Truex slowed in Turn 2 and stalled his car out on the backstretch.

Kahne led the field back to the green flag on lap 144, but Gordon was able to make the pass on the high side.  Kahne fell back to fourth, and Gordon was able to pull away from Kyle Busch to take the victory.

Fantasy Preview: Indianapolis 7/27

This Sunday, the Sprint Cup Series heads to Indianapolis for the Brickyard 400.  Below are my fantasy picks going into the race.

Tier A
Jeff Gordon
This weekend marks the 20th anniversary of Gordon's win in the inaugural Brickyard 400, and he's hungry for a victory.  I wouldn't be surprised if he finds victory lane on Sunday after starting on the front row.

Bench:
Kurt Busch

Tier B
Tony Stewart
Stewart is one of the best drivers when it comes to racing at Indianapolis, and he is still looking for his first win of the season.  He just won his first sprint car race after breaking his leg almost a year ago, and a win in Sprint Cup racing shouldn't be far behind.

Ryan Newman
Newman comes into this race as the defending champion.  Like Stewart, Newman is a native Hoosier who is still looking for his first win of the season.  Don't be surprised if Newman goes back-to-back at the Brickyard.

Bench:
Paul Menard
Martin Truex Jr.

Tier C
Juan Pablo Montoya
Montoya returns to the site of his greatest heartbreak.  Montoya was always a force to be reckoned with at Indianapolis, and he returns looking for the victory.  The Team Penske IndyCar driver will come into the race with nothing to lose.  With no points on the line, Montoya will go all-out for the victory on Sunday.

Bench:
Bobby Labonte
