Bowyer Snaps Winless Streak with Martinsville Victory

Originally written for CLNS Media.

Clint Bowyer won the STP 500 on Monday afternoon from the Martinsville Speedway.

The race, originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, was postponed due to a snow storm in the Virginia area.  That forced NASCAR to run most of the Truck Series race and the entire Cup Series race on Monday.

Bowyer’s victory snapped a 190-race winless streak that dated back to his victory at Charlotte in October 2012.

Since Bowyer moved to Stewart-Haas Racing in 2017, he has seen his teammate Kevin Harvick run up front every week while Bowyer ran mid-pack.  Bowyer said watching his teammates succeed helped light a fire within him and his team.

“It’s hard to watch your teammates…have all that success,” Bowyer said.  “It still fuels that fire, and it can either be a detriment or a positive attraction, and for us, it just made us want to get to Victory Lane.”

Bowyer dominated on Monday, and led a race-high 215 laps.  Bowyer said he knew his car was fast from the beginning of the weekend.

“Something just felt right about today,” Bowyer said.  “Our weekend, all four cars were fast.”

Kyle Busch had a strong car and ran up front throughout the race, but he couldn’t get to Bowyer to make a move for the win.  Instead, he collected his third second-place finish of the season.

Busch said he was starting to get frustrated with running so well without a victory.

“We’ve been that close each and every week, so we’re right there, we’re knocking on the door,” Busch said.  “We’ve been the closest thing to everybody each and every week.”

Truex Cruises to Victory in California

Originally written for CLNS Media.

Martin Truex Jr. dominated the Auto Club 400 from Auto Club Speedway to pick up his first victory of the season.

Truex and his team dominated from the very beginning of the weekend.  Truex won the pole for Sunday’s race, and won both stages on his way to victory lane.  Truex led 125 laps on Sunday, returning to the dominant form of his 2017 Championship run.

Truex said he knew they would have a shot at the victory after the team’s first pit stop.

“I knew we had a really good racecar after the first adjustment of the race; the car came alive,” Truex said.  “From there it was just about managing my tires and being smart.”

Truex and his team struggled on pit road throughout the day, and lost spots on most of the team’s pit stops.

Truex said his team was never worried because their car was so strong.

“We had a little trouble getting beat out of the pits and that was tough,” Truex said.  “Once we got some clean air, this thing was unbelievable.  We just had a good enough car to make it happen.”

Kyle Larson finished second on Sunday, but early contact with Kevin Harvick put that in jeopardy.  Harvick, who had won the past three races, made contact with Larson and spun coming off of Turn 2, ending his day.

Harvick said the accident was his fault, and Larson said he didn’t know what really happened.

“We were racing really hard,” Larson said.  “I don’t know if he was coming down to side-draft me or what, but we made contact and it spun his car to the right.”

Larson said he didn’t have anything for Truex.

“We could always get to third or fourth and then stall out…still a really good day,” Larson said.

Harvick Wins Third Straight with Phoenix Victory

Originally written for CLNS Media.

Kevin Harvick won the TicketGuardian 500 from ISM Raceway on Sunday afternoon.

Harvick won his third race in a row on Sunday, and the victory was his ninth at the Phoenix raceway.  The win also tied his with Hall of Fame driver Mark Martin with 40 Cup Series victories.

Harvick didn’t dominate the race like he had in the previous two races and he only led 38 laps on his way to victory lane.

Harvick said he and his team came into the weekend knowing they had a shot at the victory.

“Everyone was really determined this week,” Harvick said.  “We just wanted to go and stomp them; we didn’t stomp them, but we won.”

Following last weekend’s victory, Harvick’s car was found to be illegal.  The team was penalized and lost the seven playoff points the team had earned throughout the race.

Harvick said the penalty lit a fire in his team and motivated them to win on Sunday.

“I’ve been mad as all get out because this team does a great job,” Harvick said.  “And to take that away from those guys really [ticked] me off last week.”

Kyle Busch finished second to Harvick for the second week in a row.  Busch said he knew they wouldn’t have anything for Harvick’s team during the race.

“Before the race, I knew [Harvick] had the car to beat,” Busch said.  “We actually had a shot to race him and outrace him and try to beat him, but it just didn’t quite work out.”

“Proud to come home second, but now it’s starting to get frustrating.”
