Carl Edwards Dominates the Food City 500

Originally written for CLNS Radio.

Carl Edwards dominated the Food City 500 to pick up the victory on Sunday afternoon from Bristol Motor Speedway.

Edwards started on the pole and led a race-high 276 laps.  Edwards said this victory was because of his team’s continued hard work.

“There were so many different things happening out there,” Edwards said.  “Different guys were fast at different times.  These guys have been working really hard.”

Edwards was the only Joe Gibbs Racing car to run a clean race.  Denny Hamlin made contact on pit road, and Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch had multiple tire problems.  Edwards said his team was concerned about his teammates’ tire problems.

“There was some concern, but for some reason…we didn’t have any of those issues.”

“Now we’re in the Chase and we can go have some fun.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. came back to finish second after a dead battery at the start of the race put him two laps down.  Earnhardt said his team got him back into the race and that he used luck to get up front.

“We had a dead battery at the start of the race,” Earnhardt said.  “That cost us two laps early in the race, but we worked really hard, [crew chief] Greg Ives did a great job helping us get our laps back.”

“We got a lot of luck on those last several restarts; we restarted on the outside.  The car was about a 10th- to 15th-place car, just got lucky on those last restarts where we lined up.”

Busch Continues NASCAR Domination with Win at Texas

Originally written for CLNS Radio.

Kyle Busch won the Duck Commander 500 from Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday night.

Busch picked up another victory, continuing his dominance of NASCAR’s three National Series.  He has now won the last four NASCAR races, dating back to last weekend’s races at Martinsville.   Busch said his team is working really well together right now.

“Right now, it’s just clicking and going together,” Busch said.  “It’s pretty darn good…having a blast, living the dream.”

Austin Dillon spun to begin a large wreck with about 40 laps to go, and Busch was able to get around Martin Truex Jr. on the final restart.  Busch said his car had gotten better as the night went on.

“We made some great adjustments all night long.  I think the racetrack kept coming to us as the night progressed as well too.”

Truex, who dominated the second half of the race, stayed out with Dillon on a late caution while the other leaders pitted.  Truex said his old tires couldn’t hold off the other leaders.

“Our plan was to stay out and [crew chief Cole Pearn] called me in at the last second and I didn’t want to hit the cone,” Truex said.  “By the time we finally got rolling there, we just didn’t have the grip everyone else had and we were just sliding around.”

“It’s frustrating, but that’s racing and that’s the way it goes sometimes.”
