Busch Continues NASCAR Domination with Win at Texas

Originally written for CLNS Radio.

Kyle Busch won the Duck Commander 500 from Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday night.

Busch picked up another victory, continuing his dominance of NASCAR’s three National Series.  He has now won the last four NASCAR races, dating back to last weekend’s races at Martinsville.   Busch said his team is working really well together right now.

“Right now, it’s just clicking and going together,” Busch said.  “It’s pretty darn good…having a blast, living the dream.”

Austin Dillon spun to begin a large wreck with about 40 laps to go, and Busch was able to get around Martin Truex Jr. on the final restart.  Busch said his car had gotten better as the night went on.

“We made some great adjustments all night long.  I think the racetrack kept coming to us as the night progressed as well too.”

Truex, who dominated the second half of the race, stayed out with Dillon on a late caution while the other leaders pitted.  Truex said his old tires couldn’t hold off the other leaders.

“Our plan was to stay out and [crew chief Cole Pearn] called me in at the last second and I didn’t want to hit the cone,” Truex said.  “By the time we finally got rolling there, we just didn’t have the grip everyone else had and we were just sliding around.”

“It’s frustrating, but that’s racing and that’s the way it goes sometimes.”

Johnson took the lead after the race was sent into overtime following a late caution.  Johnson said he had a strong car at the very end of the race, which allowed him to overtake Kevin Harvick in the final laps.

“Harvick and I got by Joey [Logano] there at the start, and I got a great run off Turn 2,” Johnson said.  “I thought, ‘I actually got a shot at this thing,’ which I didn’t expect to have.”

“Harvick’s been so fast and I cleared him and I kind of got away.  We saved our best for last.”

Harvick, who led a race-high 142 laps, said his car didn’t take off well on restarts.

“We weren’t very good on restarts for four or five laps unless we were all by ourselves,” Harvick said.  “The 48 [of Johnson] was able to hang with us and we weren’t able to drive it in like we needed to.”

Kevin Harvick Wins at Phoenix

Harvick, who has dominated at Phoenix in recent years, had a strong car during the race, but had to hold off Edwards following an overtime finish.  Harvick was able to beat Edwards to the line by .01 seconds.

Harvick said he knew Edwards would make it tough for him at the end of the race.

“I knew [Edwards] was better through 3 and 4, and that was not the car I wanted to see behind me,” Harvick said.  “I got up too high and I wasn’t able to stay on the bottom like I wanted to and he got into me, like he should have.”

“I knew…I was going to have to get into his door, and it worked, just barely.”

Edwards came within inches of picking up the victory, and he said he didn’t quite time his final move correctly.

“I thought I’d just move [Harvick] out of the way and get by, I just didn’t move him far enough,” Edwards said.  “I tried to side-swipe him before he got there, but I needed to be in front of his front tire.”
