Dale Jr. Wins at Daytona, Austin Dillon Walks Away from Scary Crash

Originally written for CLNS Radio.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. won a wet and wild Coke Zero 400 from the Daytona International Speedway early Monday morning.

Earnhardt had the strongest car all race, leading 96 of 161 laps and pulling away on every restart late in the race.  Earnhardt said it was a testament to the motors and cars that Hendrick Motorsports builds.

“All the guys back at the shop, they put together such good cars,” Earnhardt said.  “This car is the one we won Talladega with.  It’s going to get retired one of these days, hopefully we get to keep using it.”

Earnhardt’s win, however, was overshadowed by a scary last-lap accident once the cars had passed the finish line.  Denny Hamlin turned sideways and made contact with Austin Dillon.  Dillon’s car was sent airborne, tearing down the catchfence before landing on its roof.

Dillon’s engine came to rest in the middle of the frontstretch grass, while his car came to rest at the end of pit road.  13 fans were examined following the race in the area where debris from Dillon’s car flew, with four fans treated on site and another taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Earnhardt, who lost his father at Daytona in 2001, said he was thankful that Dillon was able to walk away from the crash.

“That scared the hell out of me, I’ll be honest with you.  I saw the whole thing happen…that was terrifying to watch.  You know a wreck like that’s got the potential for someone to get injured…I’m just so thankful that all of the drivers are okay.”

Dillon, who was treated and released from the infield care center, said he had a bruised tailbone and bruised forearm.

“It’s part of this racing,” Dillon said.  “Everyone is pushing as hard as they can…it’s just a wad.  Ice up and go to Kentucky.”

Kyle Busch Returns to Victory Lane

Busch picked up his first victory of the season on Sunday.  Busch missed the first 11 races of the season with an ankle injury after crashing in the first Xfinity Series race in February.

“This is awesome,” Busch said.  “I can’t say enough about my team…everyone that got me back in shape and got me back ready to go.”

Busch’s victory makes him eligible for the Chase for the Sprint Cup, but he still has to make the top 30 in driver points.  Busch left Sonoma 37th in points, still needing an average finish of 13th or better over the remaining 10 races before the Chase cutoff.

“We’ve got our work cut out for us, we knew we did in the beginning,” Busch said.  “It’s unfortunate that we had a couple crashes and I hate it for my guys…they don’t deserve to be in that spot.”

Many in the NASCAR community were worried that Sonoma’s twists and turns, which require substantial braking, would aggravate Busch’s foot injury.  Busch said there was nothing to worry about.

“My foot hurts a little bit, but not as bad as I expected it to,” Busch said.  “It actually hurt worse in practice, I think I warmed it up all day Friday.”

Kurt Busch Wins Wet Race at Michigan

Originally written for CLNS Radio.

Kurt Busch won the rain-shortened Quicken Loans 400 from Michigan International Speedway on Sunday afternoon.

Busch won a race that was delayed four times for rain during the shortened event.  Busch said the win was a testament to his team’s chemistry.

“It’s amazing when you have team chemistry at the level that we do,” Busch said.  “[Crew chief] Tony Gibson led these guys through a backup car and the pit crew was there giving their best.”

Busch was running second for a late-race restart, but leader Kyle Larson ran out of gas just three laps before the rain came for the final time.  Busch took the lead on lap 132 and never looked back on the way to his second victory of 2015.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling knowing what we went through, paced ourselves and found the lead towards the latter part of the race; and then the rain came in,” Busch said.  “Tony Gibson makes these guys work a little extra hard.  I always say thanks, I’m always there early with them, and it’s a great team chemistry feel.”
