Johnson had a dominant car throughout the day, leading 191 of 341 laps.  Johnson said his team has continued to work hard even after being eliminated from the Chase.

“We’re not in the Chase and we’re not where want to be, fighting for the championship,” Johnson said.  “We’ll always keep fighting and trying to make our cars better.”

Johnson’s victory, however, will not be the most talked about part of the race.  During the first green-white-checkered finish, Brad Keselowski and Jeff Gordon made contact fighting for the lead.  The contact cut down Gordon’s left-rear tire, and relegated him to a 29th-place finish.

After the race, Gordon confronted Keselowski on pit road.  After Kevin Harvick came over and shoved Keselowski, a fight between Gordon and Keselowski’s teams broke out.  Both drivers were left with bloody and bruised faces.

Johnson said the high emotions in the garage are a part of the new Chase format.

“We’re all in the position to win the championship and this is what happens.  I’m sure it was highly entertaining today.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Wins at Martinsville

Originally written for CLNS Radio.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. won his fourth race of the season on Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.

Earnhardt’s victory was his first victory at Martinsville.  Earnhardt said he was excited to take home his first grandfather clock, the unique trophy given out at Martinsville.

“I’ve wanted that grandfather clock since I was a boy, and I finally got one today,” Earnhardt said.
Earnhardt’s victory came one weekend after being eliminated from Chase contention.  Earnhardt said he was relieved to not have to worry about points for the rest of the season.

“Don’t have to worry about points anymore; it’s about trophies.  My team, we all came together and made it happen.”

The victory was also special for Hendrick Motorsports.  This weekend marked 10 years since a Hendrick Motorsports team plane crashed en route to Martinsville, killing Rick Hendrick’s son and brother, among others.  Earnhardt said he was glad he could get his team the victory.

“I can’t imagine losing the magnitude of people Rick lost,” Earnhardt said.  “My heart goes out to him this weekend, and I’m glad his cars are god here; this honors them.”
