Joey Logano Wins the Irwin Tools Night Race
Originally written for CLNS Radio.
Joey Logano won the Irwin Tools Night Race from
Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night.
Logano held off Kevin Harvick over the closing laps,
and Logano said the victory was a credit to his team and their hard work.

“We focused on what we needed in practice and got the
reward in the race,” Logano said. “It
was just all about working the lapped traffic at the end…it was a very exciting
last 20, 30 laps for sure.”
Logano was able to pick up his second-straight victory
in the Irwin Tools Night Race, and he said his team made his car handle well at
the right time.
“You’ve got to have a car that can move around,
especially when you’re lapping cars,” Logano said. “The last few races here, [crew chief Todd Gordon]’s
definitely given me the car I needed to make the moves.”
Harvick followed Logano over the final 30 laps, but
could never get beside him to make a pass.
Harvick said it was Logano’s ability to get around lapped traffic that
got him to victory lane.
“I couldn’t get my car to rotate across the center
like I needed it to,” Harvick said. “[Logano]
was able to get those huge runs up off the exit of the corner and just stayed
one step ahead of me through traffic.”
“In clean air we probably were a little faster, but…I
had to be in front of him to show that.
He was just one step ahead of me in traffic.”

Matt Kenseth Dominates in Michigan
Originally written for CLNS Radio.
Matt Kenseth won the Pure Michigan 400 from Michigan
International Speedway on Sunday afternoon.
Kenseth dominated the race, leading a race-high 146
laps after starting on the pole. He had
to fend off Kevin Harvick on a late restart with 13 laps to go, but he was able
to keep the lead and pick up the victory.
Kenseth said his teammate Denny Hamlin helped Kenseth overtake Harvick
on the final restart.
“Denny did a spectacular job pushing me first from the
restart zone to about turn two,” Kenseth said.
“It was like a superspeedway race and it was whoever got locked up.”

With 50 laps to go, Kenseth held off a hard-charging
Austin Dillon for the lead. Kenseth said
that battle was the hardest of the day.
“We went back and forth a few times and made some
contact up there and it was hard to get away from him. My car took about five laps to get going and
once it got going it was pretty stout.”
Joe Gibbs Racing has now won five of the last six
races, but Kenseth said it was still too early to pick Chase favorites with
three races until the cutoff.
“You have 16 teams [in the Chase] that are capable of
winning races on a weekly basis, as well as championships. The guys gave us…rockets the last couple
months and we’re going to work hard to keep it rolling.”

Joey Logano Wins at Watkins Glen
Originally written for CLNS Radio.
Joey Logano won the Cheez-It 355 from Watkins-Glen
International following a last-lap pass on Sunday afternoon.
Logano passed Kevin Harvick in the final corners after
he ran out of gas coming to take the checkered flag. Logano said he was unsure whether he could
get by Harvick on the final lap.

“I felt pretty sure the 4 [of Harvick] was going to
run out, but it got to the last lap and I’m like ‘shoot he’s not running out,’”
Logano said. “Right at the end I was
able to get by him.”
Logano picked up the sweep of the weekend following
his Xfinity Series victory on Saturday, and it comes a week after he ran out of
gas while leading at Pocono.
“First time I swept the weekend, we never thought it’d
happen at a road course,” Logano said. “Makes
up for last week; we lost the race this way and now we won one this way.”
Harvick was two corners away from the victory when he
ran out of gas, but he was still able to finish third. Harvick said his team has had fast cars and
that they’re looking forward to the Chase.
“I thought I’d done a pretty good job of saving fuel
under the caution and really I was just running as fast as I needed to protect
the lead,” Harvick said. “That’s just
kind of how this middle of the season has gone.
We’ve had really fast cars but the circumstances have just gotten the
best of us.”
After running out a lap from the finish at Pocono,
Kyle Busch was able to finish second at Watkins Glen. Busch is now 30th in points, which grants him
a berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup following his four victories since his
return in May.
“We definitely didn’t want to run out again; we wanted
to make sure we could make it to the end,” Busch said. “We knew we would be [top 30 in points], it
was just a matter of time. That was
probably another reason we didn’t need to run out of gas and have an issue here
today.”
